Maja Božovič is a Serbian-born fashion designer based in Bratislava, Slovakia. She holds a master degree in Fashion Design at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Maja has acquired and trained her professional experiences and skills in Belgian avant-garde studios as A. F. Vandevorst, Honest by Bruno Pieters, Trois Quarts and in MayaMay, Bratislava. Besides her own art production, she is a pedagogue of fashion design at the Private Secondary Art School of Design in Bratislava. For her fashion collections, Maja has been awarded the first place at Mercedes-Benz Prague Fashion Week 2012, Young fashion designer from Tatra Banka Foundation in 2013 and Best Fashion Graduate 2014 by Slovak Fashion Council.
For a long time, Maja has been devoted to the conceptions of Slow and Sustainable fashion, and determined by the idea of “upcycle and recycle”. Therefore, she utilises materials as wood, linen, cotton, wool and silk that are provided by eco-certified suppliers. In her work, she reflects contemporary social issues, however, she always remains focused on and inspired by a single individual, their emotions and unique human experience. As a result, Maja’s work is publicly recognised as honest, emotional and truthful, although in structure appears „sculpturally“ raw and crude.
Each of her fashion pieces is unique in details and shapes of the fabric’s inner stitching which can be read and interpreted by the wearer as a story of the piece’s creation or author’s personal mark. Hence, Maja’s works cannot be perceived only as clothes but as possible features of a wearer’s distinctive personality or daily rituals and experiences.
